Creative Recovery Network

Creative Recovery Network

Creative Recovery Network is Australia's leading organisation advancing the integration of arts, culture and creativity within disaster management systems, while contributing to the development of creative recovery practice internationally. We believe that creativity is not an optional addition to disaster recovery—it is essential social infrastructure. It strengthens connection, belonging, cultural continuity and collective agency, enabling communities to prepare for, respond to and recover from disaster in ways that honour local knowledge, identity and aspirations. Working across the emergency management, arts, health, community development and research sectors, we build the partnerships, frameworks, evidence and capability needed to embed creative practice within disaster preparedness, response and long-term recovery. Our work supports governments, organisations, artists and communities to develop place-based, trauma-informed and culturally responsive approaches that strengthen resilience before, during and after disaster. As climate change accelerates the frequency and complexity of disasters worldwide, Creative Recovery Network is helping shape an emerging international field of practice. Through research, policy leadership, professional development, strategic partnerships and community led initiatives, we are demonstrating how creativity can become a vital component of resilient communities and regenerative futures—where recovery is not simply about rebuilding what was lost, but creating stronger, more connected and more hopeful places to live.

Time is critical in the control of bushfires. Fast initial attack quickly assists in minimizing the size of a fire. Fixed-wing aircraft can quickly lay down retardant lines & suppress fires with foam/gel to slow the spread, giving ground crews the much needed time and space to extinguish fires. Firefighting is both a battle and a team effort. Meet three members of the aerial attack team: The  Air Tractor AT-802F  is built for attacking fires large and small – not only as an initial attack firefighter but also for extended duties supporting ground crews. It combines agility, performance, high-reliability and pinpoint accuracy with a versatility to operate over difficult terrain. The  RJ85 Large Air Tankers  have proven themselves time and again. With a tank capacity of 12,500 litres and able to cruise at over 700 km/hr, the RJ85 Air Tanker can reach a fire ground quickly and drop a large and accurate retardant line with a selectable coverage level to suit the fire type. The RJ85 is capable of gel and foam application. The  Dash 8-400AT airtanker  is fast, efficient and flexible and is the most modern airtanker in the world today. Featuring an external 10,000 litre tank with the ability to drop retardant, water, or foam/gel, via a proprietary Retardant Delivery System (RDS), capable of multiple, constant-flow coverage levels from a single, controlled-flow release over wildfires.

Financial Counselling Australia

Financial Counselling Australia

Financial Counselling Australia (FCA) is the national peak body for financial counsellors and a trusted voice in Australia’s disaster resilience ecosystem. FCA strengthens and connects a national workforce delivering free, independent and confidential support to people experiencing financial hardship, while advocating for fairer markets and better consumer outcomes. FCA also coordinates the National Debt Helpline (NDH), the front door to the financial counselling sector, providing accessible, nationwide support via phone and online services. In disasters, financial counsellors play a critical role across the full recovery spectrum. They provide immediate “financial first aid” following events such as bushfires, floods and storms—helping individuals and small businesses stabilise their situation, navigate complex systems, and avoid escalating harm. NDH plays a key role in connecting people to this support early. This is followed by sustained, structured assistance throughout recovery, often spanning several years. Since the 2019 Black Summer bushfires, financial counsellors have supported tens of thousands of disaster-impacted Australians, working with creditors, insurers and government systems while identifying systemic issues and informing reforms. FCA coordinates this work nationally, partnering across sectors to strengthen disaster response, recovery and preparedness, and support communities to build long-term financial resilience.

The Resilience Canopy

Communities worldwide face mounting pressures from climate change and social challenges. These stresses – from shifting economic patterns and social dynamics to environmental impacts – are reshaping how communities live, work, and thrive. Increasing disasters cause compounding and generational impacts for individuals, families and communities. These challenges don’t just stretch local systems; they expose existing cracks in communities – especially for those already facing disadvantage. Instead of creating dependence that systematically erodes their natural resilience The Resilience Canopy supports communities to “bounce forward” using their own collective wisdom and locally-driven solutions Through an integrated system that bridges critical gaps in planning, partnership and implementation, we provide communities with training, tools and support to apply the program in their own communities. This process helps them identify their unique resilience priorities and take practical steps with partners willing to invest time, expertise or funds to turn that into action. When systems inevitably reach their breaking point, the most prepared communities are ones that are already economically diverse, socially connected, mentally healthy, and collectively empowered to solve their own challenges. By empowering communities and partners, we can fundamentally reimagine how Australia builds community strength across every aspect of life.

UNSW Sydney’s iCinema Research Centre, in collaboration with Fire and Rescue NSW, is pleased to showcase  iFire   2.0  – the world’s first, AI‑driven cinematic visualisation system designed to help emergency services train in situational awareness and decision-making for dynamically evolving fire events. iFire 2.0   utilises a deep learning fire spread model for hyper-realistic, interactive 3D cinematic scenarios that can be displayed on a range of 2D and 3D screens, offering lifelike problem‑solving experiences that test and extend practical knowledge. It allows first responder teams to navigate simulated firegrounds as if they were physically present, safely explore complex environments and unanticipated challenges to rehearse readiness and response. By rendering high‑fidelity grassland and forest fires,  iFire   2.0 enables participants to explore fire behaviour under moderate-to-catastrophic fire danger conditions. The AI model generates scientifically grounded “what‑if” scenarios, allowing responders to adjust variables such as wind speed and direction, to preview the unpredictable look and feel of extreme fire events. The result is a powerful real‑time training environment where teams can trial strategies and practice complex decision‑making under realistic pressure. iFire   2.0  supports operational planning, incident management training and post‑event review – helping first responders build confidence, capability and resilience. These solutions maintain consistent comfort and protection, maintaining durable windproof, waterproof, and breathability even after frequent washing. They also protect from blood pathogens, chemicals and particulates. Search and rescue specialists will be able to see GORE-TEX CROSSTECH® PYRAD® Stretch Technology, which is the first specialized rescue fabric to combine blood pathogen and flame protection with enhanced comfort and freedom of movement. This full stretch fabric is lightweight, highly visible, durably windproof, waterproof, breathable and protects against incidental flame and common chemicals. It provides responders with the protection needed for technical rescue callouts, such as traffic accidents, as well as agility for difficult situations, such as working in confined spaces. Visitors will have a unique opportunity to directly experience the strong thermal protection even in wet conditions and the superior breathability of GORE-TEX® CROSSTECH® PARALLON® System through the testing tool at the booth. Visitors can also explore firefighting gloves as well as new firefighting boots engineered with GORE-TEX® EXTRAGUARD UPPER technology, offering an unprecedented level of durability. All Gore’s high-performance protective fabrics provide superior protection for those who protect us with levels of performance that exceed industry standards for breathability, waterproofness and resistance to heat and flame.
